Cloud Walker: The Eternal Soul of the Wild Mustang
There are times when a painting feels less like a creation and more like a discovery. Cloud Walker was one of those moments. This 24 x 18 inch oil painting began, like many of mine do, with a toned canvas and a loose idea, but as the mustang emerged from the mist, I realized I wasn’t just painting a horse. I was painting something deeper: the unbreakable spirit of a wild animal that has endured despite centuries of human attempts to tame, move, or erase it.
The wild mustang holds a special place in the American landscape. Fierce, intelligent, and independent, it has become both a symbol and a survivor. In Cloud Walker, I wanted to move beyond the physical form and into something more ethereal: the soul of the mustang, untouchable and free, rising above the dust and noise of the world below.
The swirling, cloud-like background isn’t tied to a specific place. It is open and undefined so the horse stands in its own space, beyond time and boundary. This horse doesn't need our approval. It exists on its own terms, watchful, aware, and utterly free.
As a wildlife painter, I often feel the presence of the animals I paint long before the first brushstroke hits the canvas. With Cloud Walker, that presence felt calm, strong, and eternal.
